Week 1 Discussion Cases

Q Three cases are mentioned in the reading: the Kate and Abby mother/daughter conflict abut giving money to a homeless person (p. 7), whether to use a file of a professor’s past exams (p. 19), and the Ann and Sandy nursing case (p. 34). Respond to one of these cases: how would you handle it as one of the people involved, and which ethical theory or theories do you find useful?

I chose the case of Kate and Abby. If I would have been Kate, I would have explained to Abby about being selfless and virtuous and giving to the poor and needy generously. I would have told Abby about religious teaching in the Bible and as Jesus had taught His followers to be selfless and feed the hungry or provide shelter to the homeless. The ethical theory of Virtue Ethics would be useful in explaining to Abby about trying to imbibe specific virtues like kindness, selflessness, humility, empathy and magnanimity.
